Beta Records TV - Your Music Matters!

Independent Music TV Show...

Hiromi Uehara - Modern Jazz Piano & Keyboard Superstar

I recently had the pleasure of seeing the incredible Hiromi live at the Kuumbwa Jazz Center in Santa Cruz, CA (a fantastic community non-profit jazz club even by worldwide big-city standards) where I am a member and have sponsored several fantastic shows over recent years including Pat Metheny with Keyfax New Media. Bobbi Todaro does an awesome job gathering the very best talent to add Kuumbwa to their west coast US tour schedules.

She really is one of the new great modern keyboard talents equally artistically comfortable and fluid on piano or synthesizer. Check out her new album "Beyond Standard" or the "Spiral" CD with Bonus DVD from 2007.

Brian Eno - Bloom for iPhone, Ambient Music Generator

Brian Eno - ambient thought leader, progressive technologist has created the hypnotic "Bloom" for iPhone visual composition of ambient music. What would Erik Satie - the original piano minimalist and "phonometrician" think after 120 years of technological advancement? Eno calls it "a music box for the 21st century"

Bloom supports single and multi-touch for melodic or harmonic composition and has its own song representation format.

Amy Seefeldt- Contemporary Art Portfolio 08, Developed By MB

This is a beta version/partial compilation of Amy Seefeldt's (San Francisco artist) Contemporary art portfolio project I concepted and designed using Keynote/Quicktime and staged for the web on Vimeo (so here the encode quality/frame-rate is 2 stages degraded from the ultra crisp HD original).

The concept/brief was to deliver:

• A branded portfolio - immersive, kinetic but with a contemporary gallery/postcard feel rather than MTV fast-cut aesthetic

• Progressive visual assembly, paced to elegantly reveal the key information in series for optimum absorption

• Positioning thought-provoking verbal fragments about each work with a consistent design theme for the series

The earlier working versions stubbed Chicane's/Saltwater as a more ethereal soundtrack as opposed to Goldfrapp/Deerstop, both groups being amongst the best in UK progressive electronica. The Goldfrapp song has a timeless ambience with a piano motif similar to french romantic minimalist Erik Satie's "furniture music".

LAVA (Live Audio Visual Animation) Madonna 3D Demo, 2000

This real-time rendered demo of LAVA (Live Audio Visual Animation) was made back in 2000 by Alan Seefeldt/Mark Buchanan/Mike Barnes/Alan Peevers.

All the movement is triggered by audio analysis linked to kinetically animated meshes and the camera and scene cuts are controlled by a custom real-time automation/scripting language.

www.LAVA.com was founded in 1999 by Alan Seefeldt/Mike Barnes (me) & Alan Peevers and incubated by Creative Labs Inc.

LAVA pioneered MV3 (Music-Video-3D), POD's (embedded webpages & 3Dobject hyperlinks) & a push ad engine ORBS (Objects with replaceable banners), Graffitti ( Text FX) and a multitude of realtime generated texture and scene visual FX implemented first in OpenGL and later in Direct3D.

Blogged with the Flock Browser

Andrew Frame- Serial Entrepreneur, founder ooma.com

Andrew's talk at Stanford is one of the best of the whole series. Highly focused and succinct summary of what really matters in laying the core foundation for a successful venture. I completely and instinctively agree with his positive views on mentoring up and down. Wherever you are in your career, and experienced mentor to help navigate "You Inc" through rough or murky waters is utterly invaluable.

Guy Kawasaki "Reality Check"

Loved "The Art Of The Start" and "Selling The Dream" this is his latest entrepreneurial marketing inspiration!

Chumby-Not Just For Teen Girls, Geeks & Those Needing Chums!

Chumby-Part 1 - First Thoughts...

Chumby (www.chumby.com) the friendly bedside Wi-Fi web2.0 appliance, iPod charger, Pandora streamer, music, video & widget player safely landed at my house today. Whoa! Touch-screen display, stereo speakers & dual USB ports built-in (charge your phone & iPod overnight!). The product marketing guys really though this one through!

You may not know it yet but you absolutely need one! That svelt bedside atomic-crystal world clock-radio/projector with iPod speaker dock that was "oh-so-hip"last year at Sharper Image now look like an abacus compared to an iMac!

Despite the name (which frankly conjures up images of some obese yet cuddly and charming character from Teletubbies), Chumby is not only "fun" to use but an ingenious and awesome feat of HW & Web engineering/interaction.

It may "seem" like a Toy for Teens but it is completely configurable so you can easily setup channels with custom widget collections today for almost any practical business monitoring application: Google Calendars, LinkedIn, Stock Tickers, News, RSS, Blogs/Micro-Blogs.

Of course Facebook, MySpace, YouTube, Twitter, eBay, Flickr and all the essentials of your social web life can all be accessed in summary form. The widget support out-of-the-box is most excellent and so far everything I have tried so far works flawlessly with simple browser-based configuration. However, this is day 1 so let's see how this all holds up under the scrutiny of daily use.

Extracting Chumby from his/her (it's?) cute pastel packaging complete with charms, you just plug-in the power adapter (shame it doesn't match Chumby's color like Apple!) and Chumby walks you thru a video greeting, basic use and Wi-Fi setup. This initial setup  (unlike almost every other Wi-Fi/Network setup) is actually delightfully simple considering how sophisticated the device is-all you need is your network login/password. I added it to my Airport Extreme network in just a couple of minutes-bizarrely way less time than it took to get my MacBook Pro configured!

In depth look at the audio/music/media streaming capabilities to come next when I have had a chance to really put it through its paces...
